Three Generations of a Family Have Worked
for Power Partners and Its Predecessors
When Mary Elizabeth Callaway first began working at Westinghouse's Athens facility in 1958, she almost certainly never imagined her son and her grandson would be working in the same facility. Mary Elizabeth worked in Sub Assembly until around 1963, and she passed away in 1968. Her son, Roy Callaway, began working for Westinghouse around 1967. He worked for Westinghouse and then ABB for 32 years, mostly working in Shipping and Receiving, until he retired in 1999.
Roy's son, Ken, continued the family tradition in 1989. Ken started in Coil Winding, but when the operation was down, his dad would ask if he could come over and help out in Shipping. "He acted more like a boss than a co-worker when I came," Ken recalls with a laugh. Ken has been in the Shipping department for the past seven years.
Asked why the Callaways have been working at the Athens plant since 1958, Ken replies, "It's the atmosphere and the people we work with." He hopes one or more of his children will work for Power Partners as well.
With His 40th Anniversary Behind Him,
H.M. King Is in No Hurry to Retire from Power Partners
H.M. King in Power Partners' Large Transformers operation celebrated his 40th year with the company on March 30, and for him, it really was a celebration. When he signed on with Westinghouse, it was a dream job for him, and he says he still is excited about coming to work every day, seeing his friends and doing quality work.
I came from a family of corn farmers, and that wasn't what I wanted to do," he said. "I wanted to finish high school and then get a job that had paid vacation and benefits. When I got my first job here at $1.27 an hour, I was one happy little fellow to be here."
H.M. is still happy, and he isn't planning to leave any time soon. "Power Partners is making it hard to want to leave," he said. "With new things going on like gainsharing, family-oriented events and community service work involving employees, I am thankful I have the opportunity to be part what is happening in our company."
